憂鬱症是一種慢性且容易復發的疾病，會增加自殺的風險且可能引起失能，導致個人、家庭及社區的負擔。藥物治療、心理治療或合併藥物治療與心理治療雖可以有效治療鬱症病人，但統計仍有30%的病人對此類治療無法有足夠的臨床反應，這類病人被稱為”難治型鬱症”。面對難治型鬱症，目前最普遍的治療手段之一就是” 經顱磁刺激治療(TMS)”， 其原理是藉由儀器的線圈產生強力磁場，磁場可穿過顱骨，作用在大腦細胞上，產生電流並改變細胞活性，達到治療效果，同時也避免掉許多副作用。
Depression is one of chronic diseases. It has a high possibility to relapse. In addition, the suicide rate and disfunction problem will raise because of depression. These further increase lots of social costs and loading of families. Although medical and psychological therapy can cure the patients, but still have 30% of patients cannot be remedied by these treatments, which called “Treatment-resistant depression (TRP)”. To tackle TRP, the most popular treatment is “transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)”. TMS is a noninvasive stimulation by changing magnetic fields. The changed magnetic field induces electric current at a specific area of the brain through electromagnetic induction.
TMS includes different methods to treat patients. In traditional ways, doctors have to try-and-error to find the best TMS method for patients. This is time consuming and wastes medical resources. Thus, accuracy detector is needed to conquer the problem. Prof. Chen’s group developed a new medical accurate detector system by machine deep learning. Based on the collaboration with Taipei Veterans General Hospital, “MagXCure” had been demonstrated an accurate detector system for TMS treatments. Compared to the traditional solution (accuracy around 43.4%), MagXCure accuracy reaches up to 76.9%! MagXCure brings a great benefits for countless doctors and patients.
In this day, society pressure gets higher and higher, and more and more people are suffered from depression. The developed MagXCure will be an efficient system for TMS in depression treatment.
